Just to finish up S.M.A.R.T. Goals;
Today's Tip – Just to finish up S.M.A.R.T. Goals;
Last week we went over how to set S.M.A.R.T. Goals and gave you a handy printable form to help you accomplish them. Today we are going to go over some other things about goals to help you with your journey just a bit more.
For many of us goals aren't something we really use, dreams yes, wishes, of course, but goals... not so much. We dream and wish about what it is we want to achieve in life but make no solid plans to get there. Setting goals and following them is like having a map of sorts. Dreams are meaningless until written down, only then do they become reality. How to get there though, how to reach them, thats where planning comes into play.
Jotting things down on a piece of paper won't be enough. Making notes here and there wont help you in the long run, although to help you organize your thoughts they could be very helpful. Most times you have this big dream you wish to achieve. Something vague and yet specific at the same time, “I want to be rich,” I want to be famous,” I want a pet monkey.” Things like that. Those are dreams and they can be achieved but not without some very hard work, dedication, planning and some luck. Yes I said Luck there is always an “X” factor, we all know this to be true, at least with things that are intangible like fame. If you have more grounded dreams like “Own my home and have no debt.” That doesn’t need the x-factor or luck. Just dedication and sacrifice.
So here are a few things to keep in mind along with your goal setting and plans.
1. Make sure your end goal is what you want. Don't go after something someone else would want or something you think you should want, but something you actually want to achieve. This take some introspection and thought. Put some time into it or you could end up half way down the wrong path before you realize your mistake.
2. You will have more than one goal, you should have several both long term and short. Your short term goals should help you get to the long term ones. None of them should contradict each other. Trying to buy a home and pay it off while only holding a part time job while working on your acting don't go together very well.
3. Develop goals for all areas of your life. Social, Spiritual, Physical, Financial the list goes on. Figure out whats important to you and build a cohesive plan and goals to help you get there.
4. Never ever write goals like a pessimist. It is self defeating. Focus on what you will achieve not what gets left in the dust.
5. Spend some time thinking about what life will be like when you hit those goals... It will help motivate you.
6. Aim a bit higher then you are comfortable with. Most people will aim a bit lower so they have more confidence but aiming higher will be more motivational. Motivation is more important then comfort and will do more for you.
Now a few other things for you to be aware of. People will try to bring you down once you start taking active steps to improve your situation. Unless the people around you are important to your plans I would suggest not letting them know what you are doing, at least not specifically. Human nature is to bring others down to their level, you may not agree with me but take a look around at the world and rethink that impression. You will be mocked and made fun of both behind your back and to your face because you are taking an active role in what is your life. Even your friends will do this, not out of malice but because they don't understand. That's alright they don't need to as long as you do.
Keep looking at your goals as you go along, make changes when you need to no plan ever survives the first attack, adjust as you need, there isn't anything wrong with making changes as you get more information. Consider it a learning curve. Come up with a routine to look over your goals at least once a week (I suggest at least three times). Use it like a touchstone to re-affirm yourself to your plans. Take this time to do step 5 from above a little dreaming won't hurt you so long as that’s not all you do.
Good Luck!!

S.M.A.R.T .Goals!; I am Time-Bound with “T”!
Today's Tip – S.M.A.R.T .Goals!; I am Time-Bound with “T”! -
Last letter today for our weeks worth of goal setting with S.M.A.R.T goals. So lets finish off with what I consider one of the most important parts, “T” For time-bound.
Time Bound – Your goal and even the steps on the way to that goal should be time-bound. Without a time frame to help track how you are doing there will be no sense of urgency. Saying “I want to get in shape,” without a date to do so by could mean anything. Saying things like “Someday I want to lose ten pounds,” doesn't count and won’t work. If you put a finish date on something you are much more likely to finish and thus reach your goals.
Be reasonable in picking your finish date. If it's for weight loss find out what a healthy amount is to lose per week. Use your past experiences to ascertain how much time to give yourself. Think of how much effort yo put into it and act accordingly. This time you will be putting more into it so shave a day off, then shave some more time off of it to help give you that sense of urgency. Think back to school and how much more you could get done when you had a project due in the morning and hadn't started it yet. Chances are you got it done, you didn't have a choice give yourself that same opportunity to shine with your goals now.
That's all there is to it. Be specific in what it is you wish to achieve. Make it something you can measure and track so you have a sense of accomplishment. Be certain it is something that you can take action on and not something that only someone else can do for you. Have a firm grip on reality when starting your goal don't over reach so far that you fail, stretch goals are good but don't set yourself up for failure. Finally put a time frame on your goal, make it an imperative, allow it to give you a sense of urgency.
If all goes well attached to this last blog post for the week there is a link to download a goal setting worksheet that you are free to use to help you out. Good luck with all of your goals and remember, we are here to help. Give us a call or come on in to the office.

S.M.A.R.T .Goals!; Realistically R, for real!
Today's Tip – S.M.A.R.T .Goals!; Realistically R, for real! -
So today is an “R” type of day! Which I guess means that reality has settled in for the long haul... I'm not a fan of reality as a whole but in this case, I suppose we will make an exception. Today on the S.M.A.R.T. Goal journey we are looking at the letter “R” for Realistic!
Realistic, In order to have a realistic goal it needs to have two things going for it. First, it has to be something that you are actually willing to do. Second It needs to be something you are able to do. There is nothing wrong with it being a bit higher than you are comfortable with, that still makes it realistic. Only you can decide what is realistic for you. Other people are not you, and their goals and achievements should never be the benchmark you use to compare against.
Having a higher goal is usually easier, yes easier than a lower one. Low goals don't really do much to motivate you. It makes it seem as though you can do it whenever you get to it. Set your goals realistically but also in a way that gives it a sense of urgency. Now you feel under a bit of pressure, pressure is good. Pressure is what turns common coal into diamonds.
So let's take a look at the goal again we originally used “Join XYZ Gym in Springfield by the 3rd of January and sign up to go three days per week.” That's reality for you. You may think that getting to the Gym is easy, maybe it is for you. It comes down to who's benchmark you are going to use. For me getting out to the Gym three days a week would take a whole lot of effort so this would be realistic for me to accomplish. For others like my partner, three days would be business as usual. Adjust the example to fit your needs.
Tomorrow we will do “T” for ticking time bomb... or “Time-bound.” If I can manage to figure it out we will also be adding in a printable worksheet to help you with your goal setting. I haven't quite worked out how to add it into the various different blogs we use yet. We may just have it link over to our main site. Until tomorrow!!

S.M.A.R.T .Goals!; Actionable A!
Today's Tip – S.M.A.R.T .Goals!; Actionable A! -
Wow almost halfway through this week and already we are on the letter “A” for actionable. I know I'm excited as well. So why not get right to it. If you are just joining us today you have missed
“Specific,” and “Measurable.” So you should go back to blog posts and catch up with the class.
So what do we mean by actionable? Simple put something that you can take action upon. Things that you can effect and change to help you. You need to be able to do something about the goal you have chosen and then set up steps to reach them it. Steps are useful and necessary to the entire process. They help you have a sense of achievement and also tie in to measurable to help you hit the goal. Small steps are fine even baby steps are still steps and there is nothing wrong with it. Step one of our original goal to “Join XYZ Gym in Springfield by the 3rd of January and sign up to go three days per week.” some of the steps could look like this.
Step 1: Find out how much it is
Step 2: Put aside the funds to do this
Step 3: Call “XYZ” and find out what you need to bring when joining.
Step 4: Go To Gym on Jan 2nd and sign up.
Step 5: Go to the Gym on Monday, Wednesday, and Fridays.
Easy right? You could do all of that in one day. It may seem entirely foolish and when you get comfortable structuring your goals this way you wont need that extra crutch any longer and your steps will be larger and perhaps further spaced out but for now it helps to build good habits. You may want more steps after five and that would be great, for a while but at some point your goal will change into something else life “Lose X pounds per month through healthy eating and attending the gym.” This goal builds off the prior one to help you get closer to that big dream you had originally which was. “Get in Shape!” See what happens. Your goals evolve as you progress on the path.
So that’s it for “Actionable”, next up is “Realistic” helping you to set real goals that you can achieve through step by step actions that are specific.

S.M.A.R.T .Goals!; M is for Measurable!
Today's Tip – S.M.A.R.T .Goals!; M is for Measurable! -
Today class we will be going over the second letter for the S.M.A.R.T. Goal setting ways. That's right the Letter “M” for measurable. Measurement is a good thing right? We use measurements to make things like... COOKIES! It should also be used in Goal setting so that you can track your progress.
I bet you are wondering why it is important to be able to measure your progress on the journey to your goal. I'm going to give you a few reasons, enough that hopefully everyone will understand. For those of you who play MMORPG's the example is easy... Levels... you keep playing till you level up, and once you are at max level you still play only now for gear or perhaps to grief others... depends really. For those trying to lose weight, they weigh themselves... Why? So they feel better about how well they are doing and stay motivated to continue their weight-loss program. How about sports? Say fantasy football even. You keep track of stats so you can improve right. You get the idea?
Measurable – Making a criteria that can be used to track your progress in reaching your set goal.
If you can see how you are progressing it helps you stay on track to hit your goal in the set amount of time. You also get a motivational boost from hitting these “benchmarks," which helps you push on toward that goal. Having some trouble deciding on whether the goal you have set is something you can measure? Ask yourself a few simple questions to help you. How much of something do you need daily, weekly or even monthly. If you can't track your progress, then you need to rework your goal so that you can. It's not a SMART goal if there is no way for you to see how well you are progressing. With this in place you can tell if you need to change tactics in order to achieve your goal. In our example yesterday we used this as a goal “Join XYZ Gym in Springfield by the 3rd of January and sign up to go three days per week.” See there three days per week. Something you can check off and track as you go to the gym. Its okay to do more than three but three is the minimum you want to hit in order to get the desired result of getting in shape.
Tomorrow, we will be going over the next letter. “A” for actionable. Not much point in setting goals you can do nothing about. World peace, for example, is great and maybe you can help do this but you need to start small.

S.M.A.R.T .Goals!; What is a S.M.A.R.T. GOAL?
Today's Tip – S.M.A.R.T .Goals!; What is a S.M.A.R.T. GOAL?
This week we have decided on writing about some basic goal setting. It occurs to me that we should have done this prior to New Years so you could get some assistance with your resolutions, but we didn't. If you would like to take those resolutions though and rework them to fit into a proper goal format, we can certainly do that.
Goals are simple things, achieving them takes effort. In order to help you reach your goals, there are many different acronyms and ways to go about remembering them. I like S.M.A.R.T., which can be broken down several ways I use Specific, Measurable, Actionable, Realistic and Time bound. Actionable you could see replaced with attainable and achievable but to me those both fall under realistic so stick with Actionable. It is not the first goal-setting acronym I learned, but it is the most effective for me. Let's start today with Specific!
Specific: Being specific helps to narrow your focus to the essential elements. Some things to keep in mind.
Who: This will usually be you unless you have employees. Then it could be one of them. Use a name, though remember to be specific.
What: What is it you want them to do?
Where: Where is this going to take place?
When: When will it happen, for how long?
Why: What is the purpose, why are you doing this?
Here is a great example of a really awful goal: “Get in Shape!” I bet several of you used that for your new year's resolution. It's vague, unspecific and won't work. A specific goal would have said. “Join XYZ Gym in Springfield by the 3rd of January and sign up to go three days per week.” I'm sure you can see the difference between the two goals. One of them is a good goal and one of them is a dream, and a bad one at that. Simply saying I want to get in shape is no different then saying I want to be rich or I want to be famous. We all want things, the question is what will you do to get them. Might I suggest setting goals as a way to help you get to where you're aiming.
So there you are folks. Go look at your resolutions again and make sure they are specific. Tomorrow will be brought to you by the letter “M”, “M” is for measurable
