Music to my ears; Wicked World

Today's Tip – Music to my ears; Wicked World -

The world today is such a wicked thing. The World is indeed a wicked place where many people are fighting to get ahead through knocking others down. How does that help anyone get ahead? Pushing the weak aside? Think positively and embrace your outcomes. There will be moments when you meet people or companies, that just don't give you what you want. Figure out who treats others and you kindly while keeping a list in your head. Remember to always be nice back. You never know who someone is or knows.

Working together, keeping a strong positive attitude and working hard everyday will only help create opportunity! Look outside once in a while to see where you can take your next step. The world you make it will not be as wicked as you think. Keep focused. Don't be scared to take a chance out there. Most important go outside everyday at least once. Either to breathe or for a chance to go somewhere. More opportunities come to you if you are out in the field. Interact with people physically. It is not all about internet activity.

As band, you need to be on the street all the time. Walking around in major city/populated areas. Carry with you at all times a CD, Sticker and possibly a flier that leads them to your main website. This goes for all people trying to build a fan-base/awareness in their product. Again, your product is YOU. Your name. Welcome your chances with open arms through proactive actions. You want people to know you, get to people. They are not looking for you, you are looking for them. Stop being scared of such a wicked world!

Music to my ears; Solitude

Today's Tip – Music to my ears; Solitude -

My future is shrouded in dark wilderness. Hiding in the shadows of trees gets you nowhere. When you're in public, or at an event, stay in view of people. Get your face known. Talk to people. If you endure a solitude attitude you'll just become invisible like a lonely wallflower. Interact as any successful socialite would to around 10's if not hundreds of people. Your face/name should be on the minds of everyone you cross paths with. It's helpful to be a part of an ever growing environment.

It is a hard habit to break for bands when it comes to standing in the back of the venue making fun of other bands. It is not about how much you like the bands playing. Don't waste time at shows hiding in the backstage area or back walls attacking everyone for being “less than awesome”. Get out there with a positive outlook on life. Let people see that you are not mean, or spiteful. That you are fun to be around, to talk with. The idea is to not be known as a group of people who just take away from the whole experience.

With that said. Try to get your name out there by being out there. Even if you are not playing an event, start being at events. Events that have nothing to do with music, or only have to do with music. Work at getting out to places at least once a week. If there are 4 of you in a band, that is one show per person for each month. So there are your 4 shows a month, one a week. Remember, this business is about being known. Staying away from crowds because you are tired or just not interested in doing it will get you nowhere. Once you get signed, the journey is not taken care of for you. Be proactive!

Music to my ears; Paranoid

Today's Tip – Music to my ears; Paranoid -

I need someone to show me the things in life that I can't find. When you are not looking at reality in a clear cut way the human mind takes advantage of you. Showing you things that may or may not be going on in your life. One thing to stay away from is hearsay. What others say about you is not important if they don't know, or hangout with you enough. Second, you should stay away from negative talking. If you're in a position that you're not happy in and upset with where others are, then don't complain, just research their efforts, concentrate on your path.

Causing hysteria in your own mind only slows down the thinking process. This business is about keeping your mind sharp and focused. Allowing walls to cave outward in your path to success. Keep an open mind when looking into things. Brainstorm everything before making a life changing decision. This doesn't mean take forever to figure out what you are doing, but be aware of choices. Saying no is unhealthy to an ever growing mind. When you find yourself stuck, or lost, don't look at how other people are where you are not. Look into what you can be doing.

To many times people become trapped in their “mind's success” fighting to make that a reality. Success doesn't come over night, nor do the millions upon millions of dollars with that success. Thinking about being at the top, or your final outcome, is less productive then thinking about where you are and what needs to be done. Stay on your S.M.A.R.T. Goals, Network, Marketing and Practice everyday until you find your path opening up. The hard work makes everything worth it. You'll never make it by doing a show here or there, or going out once in a while. This is an everyday life-style. You want to do what you enjoy, you have to still do what it takes to become that joy!

Music to my ears; War Pigs

Today's Tip – Music to my ears; War Pigs -

Generals gathered in their masses is an understatement with a community filled with musicians. There is an over powering need, or more so, a want, for people in musical projects to lead the revolution. What is a General without its army filled with willing soldiers? No warrior is going to follow any General into war while being lead blindly through snow covered mountains. You'll find yourself alone, fighting to survive instead of evolving into a hero set for the history books.

Take time to set goals. Look at what you want to accomplish as a musician, as a band. Once you realize what you want LEAVE THE EGO AT HOME! This business is already filled with enough people wanting to stab everyone else in the back. I'm not saying go up to people who are successful and ask them to help you, or to get you signed. I am saying, let the people with egos do what they do. Soon they will be surround by a group of fighters that over power any army of ONE. Give yourself humility and embrace the efforts of those before you. Take on help, pay someone if you have to.

Be prepared in this war of bands trying to become King of the mountain. A true General can gain the trust of even their enemies. Work hard at building relationships with other bands. A group of 5 bands, 4 people in a band, equals 20 soldiers to help out one single cause. The cause to make a name for yourselves. Think about it, need advertisement? $1,000 ad on the radio, or anywhere... in a movie theater would be only $50 a soldier now. Instead of just 1 band at 4 people being $250. Though, now, you make a website that is dedicated to a group of bands. Have the ad tell people to head over to that site. Think about it...

Comedy is a sign of the times?; Guest Blogger: Steven Lolli

Today's Tip – Comedy is a sign of the times?; Guest Blogger: Steven Lolli (Comedian / Actor / Writer)

I am writing this shit on New Year's Day which means I have slept the entire day because I was up until the wee hours of the morning. I want to tell you something about comedy because that is my trade. You can take what I say with a grain of salt because I am not the most successful comedian. Although I am funnier than most. That is not saying much considering how unfunny American stand-up comedy has become. Which brings me to the bigger question: Why are comedians these days such shit? I do not have a definitive answer to this question either. But there are clues. And I will say some out loud that you will not.

The biggest clue is TV. Everything related to comedy on it is steaming shit. The goddam comics are pussies. Seemingly imitating garbage from the 90's that wasn’t that funny even when it was actually happening. In fact, let's just get this straight: The only thing that that happened in the 90s that was truly great was Michael Jordan (and even that began in the 80's). In the 90s every family had an extra TV or two which made it seem as if more people were watching predictable garbage. Personally, I only know 2 or 3 people who actually watched the show Friends and they are all assholes. There were twice as many movie theaters which made it look like more people were interested in that stupid Jim Carrey crap. When I say Carrey i mean ALL OF THEM- from Carrey to Ferrel to Jack Black to Sandler to Farley to Steve Harvey and all the Martin Lawrence clowns to Jamie Kennedy to Chris Tucker to the cast of American Pie and Seth Green and Tom Green and Kramer and George and the fucking dad from Malcom in the middle. Then in the 90s we printed the fuck out of money, so everyone felt like they had more. The 90s, actually, was like one giant fake-ass 1940s. And Hollywood was with it! Then you had the ivy league invasion. I don’t know who told the Harvard and Yale Improv club that they should be creating humor for the masses but the rich decided to make big investments in other people who already had all of the resources and none of the talent. And so we got a decade with Conan O'Briens and adult cartoon pretentious hipsters and now straight men dress like homosexuals to attract totally humorless women who think real people with opinions cannot be funny, only mean. Controversy can only be funny in the flesh if it is done accidentally by somebody pretending to be dumb.

Well, the 90's are over. Amazingly, the comics seem to still be trying to live there. Begging to showcase in the clubs which have to give away tickets anyway because fewer and fewer people will pay to see the shit they are selling. They, too, living in the 90s- think a good comedian is somehow related to TV. The poor damn comics just want to get seen so they can eventually host a reality show or book a Budweiser commercial. There is a catch though. It's 2012. Nobody is watching TV. Wonder why?

Socializing With Social Media; Negative Comments!

Today's Tip – Socializing With Social Media; Negative Comments! -

Anyone who has their own business or company or even a Facebook account has dealt with this... NEGATIVE COMMENTS!!!

You need to take care of these things right away. You can't ignore them. Even deleting them doesn't help you because someone saw it. First thing first, you need to calm down. Not everyone will agree with you, or like you for that matter, so calm down. Chances are you won't though so before you go all crazy telling the poster or posters what idiots they are, call a friend. Let them respond without the anger you feel. They will still get the point across but without resorting to ALL CAPITAL LETTERS or some crazy thing.

You have to check any type of social media you use at least daily. To thank and respond to the people who interact with you that way as well as to police up the place. Blogs have anti spam at least to filter out posts, you still have to go in and check them from time to time to clean them out but it doesn’t need to be daily unless you get constant responses to what you write, if that's the case hire someone that just deals with internet media for you. Reverbnation, Youtube, blogs and fan pages, all of these can take up a lot of your time but you have to keep up on them or shut them down.

Here is what needs to happen. You have to respond to the comments, lack of response doesn't show people that you don't care it makes them think you never saw it in the first place, that’s bad. Next try to find out why the comment or comments were made. Maybe its a misunderstanding. Don't do this in the public forum and be polite. Just because they forgot what their mothers taught them doesn't mean you should. If you resolve them then go back to wherever it was posted and thank them for working it out with you, this lets people know it was dealt with and allows the original poster to thank you as well. Sometimes the person complaining is just doing so to get a rise out of you. Don't take the bait.

In that last case when the person badmouthing you or your company then you will still have to respond or you can simply ban them, unfriend them, delete them or report them. Then make a posting about how whatever behavior will not be tolerated, apologize to the other uses for the problems and move on without mentioning names or being petty. I know its hard but that’s what needs to happen. Like I said get a friend to do it if you have to.
