Little Big Planet turned huge; Guest Blogger: Jason Ioffe

Today's Tip – Little Big Planet turned huge; Guest Blogger: Jason Ioffe (Freelance programmer and graphic artist. Specializing in C++, Java and Adobe Suite) www.Foofles.blogspot.com

For over 10 years, my hands shaped countless maelstroms of computer code into manifestations of digital elegance. Suffice it to say, I'm a freelance programmer and graphic designer. I contracted my services to numerous small and local businesses, offering solutions ranging from e-commerce to video games. Although none of my clients were particularly high profile, I did hone my skills and talents from those years of work. Like most who grew up to the sweet sounds of 8-bit orchestras, my dream was to work on upscale video game projects. In between other projects, I've always worked on computer games; either purely for sport, as a learning experience, or for minor commercial projects.

Of course, I enjoyed playing video games as much as working on them. Naturally, LittleBigPlanet for the PlayStation 3 immediately caught my interest. The game's style is endearing, with plush characters and cardboard sets that really help tap into the proverbial inner-child. Most importantly, the game revolves around user-generated content. With LittleBigPlanet's vast toolset, players can create and share their own characters, levels, and even entire games. Finally, all those years of working with Adobe Photoshop and 3D Studio Max would come to some use: I'd get to make levels in LittleBigPlanet to run around in with sack puppets!

Initially, my published works didn't gain much attention, but my efforts would soon pay off. Out of nowhere I was contacted by a 3rd Party liaison for Sony Computer Entertainment of Europe. Not only did they see my work, but they were so impressed that they contracted me to produce bonus content for the special edition of LittleBigPlanet. Needless to say, I was overjoyed to accept the offer and put everything I had into the project. For the better part of the year, I worked hard, under a strict non-disclosure agreement, to perfect my contribution to the game. I couldn't wait to see the final product and be able to share my experiences with all my friends.

That marked my first “big” project. Hopefully, it won't be my last. After working on that, I made several contacts and friends within game studios and hope to work with them again in the future. If that experience taught me anything, it's that you should never stop doing what you're good at. Personal talent can take a life-time to discover, so if you're fortunate to have unraveled that part of your life's puzzle then you should put everything you have towards it. You never know when the right people will see your skills in action. Sometimes the medium might seem unorthodox, but if the world is never exposed to your work, then it will never be recognized.

4 Levels to marketing; Level 4: “The Cold” get one person sick and the rest will be infected

Today's Tip – 4 Levels to marketing; Level 4: “The Cold” get one person sick and the rest will be infected

This is where your world of change comes in. While your campaign for a year is coming to its ending levels think about this one thing; keeping people's interest in peek with what's next for you. That's right, this level is not just about whatever you had been pushing, but enlightening people that your product (name/company/band) is not going anywhere. You have more to come, and it'll be bigger and better! Not so much, “hey a new album is coming” or “We're having a sale in our store” kind of approach, but that YOU, are getting bigger and better.

You want to infect people with who YOU are. You want to get them sick with the “YOU COLD”. So much so that they pass it on to everyone else just by being near them. “The Cold” is as simple as ensuring your time has lead to infecting people with your good name. Your quality of product. Your purpose, voice and reason to be noticed and followed. You are keeping up with all that was going with Levels 1-3 but now you are presenting your future. The future of YOU into this coming campaign of marketing. Always have a Marketing Campaign going or it's all for naught.

I also like to consider this “The Avalanche” approach. All your hard work has forced a marketing inertia in your favor. You pushed the snowball down the mountain side to have it be filled with possibility, growth and interest. I am sure you'd watch a huge snowball coming down a mountain. I know I would. Possibility of where will it go, end, hit! Growth of awareness, size and purpose. These things all happen if you continue to do all these levels of marketing properly. Your efforts will turn into a momentum of continued awareness. You'll be able to focus on other things. Also pay attention to the marketing side of your product and give it a little push here and there.

Suit up in a nice warm outfit and get out there!

4 Levels to marketing; Level 3: Blitz and exploiting your “product” to the masses

Today's Tip – 4 Levels to marketing; Level 3: Blitz and exploiting your “product” to the masses

Growing your area of Marketing with deeper radio and paper avenues. A little money goes a long way. There is no such thing as money for nothing. You'll always need money to make money. Even when dealing with assets making money. You have to acquire money and place it into assets for the assets to make money. So this is the part of your marketing where you need to really focus your direction.

Beforehand you were getting the buzz out, then getting something in people's hands. Now we are giving every corner your name, every nook and cranny. The idea is that you are now everywhere. If you have to pay for Ads in magazines, radio stations, bus sides, even working something out with local mom and pop shops. The idea is that you are everywhere at this point. Blow people's minds away with your presence.

In the end, you must be the first thing on people's minds. Your product's name, your COMPANY, needs to be on their front lip. Market with a blitz against all that you feel makes you lazy. Get up and out there. If you feel like you are to tired then splash some water on your face. You need to be awake, aware and announcing who, what and where you are! Now make things happen during this time. You are almost there...

4 Levels to marketing; Level 2: Expressing progression and your “products” name

Today's Tip – 4 Levels to marketing; Level 2: Expressing progression and your “products” name

Start letting everyone you know carry your name on them, in them and around them. This is the part of Marketing where you move into Exposure. Exposure in marketing deals with getting people to walk around with your name. When you buy something from an establishment, such as Radio Shack, you walk out of that business with a bag carrying the Radio Shack logo. You just paid to Market Radio Shack. That is genius. Now think of your reality. Think about what you can do to bring people to carry around your product (company's name).

Stickers are a great starting point. Budget wise, they are cheap for a great many more items to hand out. Shirts are good, but they cost a lot of money for fewer amount. Handouts, like fliers or cup holders, pencils and even cups. Get your product in publications, radio Ads and even gather a few people up to start a solid street-team. A great way to expand your audience of interest comes with cross-marketing. Cross-marketing builds relationships with outside areas of concentration. Where an audience normally would not have looked at you, now they get a glimpse.

Take what you have learned from Level 1 marketing and enhance your push with those avenues. Utilizing both levels at this point will help expand your audience. The reason you start with level one is because marketing is about gaining a person's interest through a comfortable pace. Too much to soon can lose their attention. This is why creating a buzz in the beginning allows a person's interest to peek over a fence to see what else is going on. Once they choose to look, they'll choose to grab and carry their interest with them.

4 Levels to marketing; Level 1: Solidifying a base and support for that base

Today's Tip – 4 Levels to marketing; Level 1: Solidifying a base and support for that base

Getting the buzz out there on your “product”. Letting your name get heard, seen and in their hands. This part of your marketing is about “Advertisement”. You have a concept, name, idea and big dream, now you have to get it going. Think of it as wanting a baby. You need to set up the goal, and your foundation. So when your child is born you already are waiting and ready for it. Once you know what you are working for you need to plant the seed to grow your baby.

Planting the seed to let it happen. Getting a buzz out there is the whole point of Level 1 Marketing. Without a buzz no one will be interested. You really want to stay away from throwing things in people's faces. That is why we start a small buzz. “HEY LOOK WHAT I HAVE HERE!!!” is not as powerful as... “Hey... did you hear about this thing that's out there?”. Hit the world of Advertising with this strategy. Advertising, as we have spoken about, is all about posting your name places.

Some ideas to get you started would be working the social media forums, and getting your main website out there. Connect all your outlets to lead to one major site... YOUR SITE! Start talking about what you have all over the place, get people talking about it. Start giving little things away for free, talk with magazines, radios and anything else you can get your name going out there. These are the secrets to Level 1 Marketing. It leads you into the next Level which is more about Exposure! See you tomorrow...

4 Levels to marketing

Today's Tip – 4 Levels to marketing; Level 1: Solidifying a base and support for that base – Getting the buzz out there on your “product”. Letting your name get heard, seen and in their hands. This part of your marketing is about “Advertisement” Level 2: Expressing progression and your “products” name – Start letting everyone you know carry your name on them, in them and around them. This is the part of Marketing where you move into Exposure. Level 3: Blitz and exploiting your “product” to the masses – Growing your area of Marketing with deeper radio and paper avenues. A little money goes a long way. Level 4: “The Cold” get one person sick and the rest will be infected – here is the world of change. While dealing with your ending campaign you have to start keeping people's interest peeked with what's next for you.

This week we'll go over the “4 Levels to marketing”. There is a strategy to marketing. It's not just “HEY LOOK AT ME I HAVE SOMETHING!!!”. There is personality involved in your growth. With that growth comes direction. There are 3 months to a normal quarter of a year. Each level is about 3 months long. How to utilize those months comes down to your goal setting skills and strategy. This week we'll give you some helpful tips to get things going with the “4 Levels to marketing”. How to do it, when to do it, and why to do it...

How to do it? With setting up goals. Know your audience, know your product. (product is your name, bi-product brings you money or is just another avenue for marketing through giving it away for free). Know your voice!!! When to do it? Right now!!! Start immediately. The first level should be going on at all times. There should always be a slight tingling buzz about your product/name at all times. Never let that bee fly away. Keep the honey coming, even if in small doses. Why to do it? Because no one will ever be interested in your AWESOME PERFECT WHATCH-A-MA-CALL-IT THING if they have never heard about it before!!!

Here is to an interesting and fun week.
