Playing to an audience must be an amazing feeling. Hearing them scream cheers of joy, chants of praise. Having people there just to be apart of a grand ole show is every performers dream. It's even the dream for companies. Companies want an audience of people involved in their productions. So where is this audience? How does a person get people to notice them?

In general it starts with brand awareness. Simple rule; Get a brand then market that brand. Having a brand for people to latch onto starts with a connection within a company's purpose. Where does a company want to be in any given market? How do they want to be remember, or perceived? These questions help build a brand. Then market that brand through every avenue available.

Where is the audience? Waiting to know a brand is out there. They will come when they are interested. Build a nice relationship with them through conversation of brand vs opinion. Keeping away from telling people what you want them to see and what they should like vs letting them in on the conversation will always help you gain their interest. Think GEICO and how they communicate with their ever growing audience.

Practicing is one of “3 Needs of Success”. A person must be skilled in their area of expertise. However, Practicing is more about learning the business of everything; working hard to master Networking and Marketing. How much practice is too much practice? Also, a person needs to be a master of their skill to ever make it to a successful position. I've heard this before “I am talented!” The harsh truth is, so are about a million other people.

Why try and be good at something if it does not matter for one's success? Working on a skill is important so that when a person makes it to their respectable place of success they can complete said tasks. There is an old saying in the business of life; Talent will only get you so far. This is by-far the truest statement in life. One must be known (marketing) and very much liked (networking) in life for their future to have any level of success.

Being humble, letting people know about you, and staying confident that you have the ability to take chances. Listen to people who may be greater or lesser in your skill. Every person has something to offer advice towards. Even if it makes you think about something “not” to do. Lose that mentality of “I am talented; so I deserve more, or should be noticed” and work hard for that success. It'll pay off more in the end.

Talking with a person leads to a nice open conversation. Let an intended target of TAC be “in control” through their questions. In reality, when using “Jury Talk” a person is in complete control without taking away the illusion of control from the intended target. With this, continue “Listening” so a proper response can come out. All together, this works to a very strong advantage for conversationalists.

By listening to respond, correctly, helps guide jury talk into a purposeful direction. Keeping answers short, it leads to more questions on the target's side. When talking with a person it keeps that conversation to an open standard. No pressure on either side. Jury Talk secret is leading the conversation through giving answers based on where you want to lead it. Since you are answering the questions, it only brings your target to give a follow up question.

So with How to say it, when to say it and why to say it controlling an outcome of any conversation rely on rule number 3 “Why To Say It”. This is all about direction. Know what you want from a conversation with another person. Having more of a direction going in gives a better foundation for when you come out of that conversation. This is all about Networking. Networking is 1 Need of the 3 Needs of Success.

Today's Tip • TAC : The Art of Conversation : Listen and respond / Upping

Waiting for a person to finish speaking, only to add to the conversation is considered Upping. They talk about a dog, then the person responding talks about their dog. It is a rude way to add to a conversation. Taking away a person's power of control leads to devaluing. It is a tough habit to beat, since most of the time we're simply trying to relate to that individual to show we understand what's going on in their mind.

A great first step is; listen to what is being said. Adding to a conversation is more about bringing out and showing interest in what was just heard. Respond to people with genuine interest to hear more about said subject. The conversation is about the other person's needs. When they are finished speaking, acknowledge that subject matter with inquisitive responses. Less a question, but more a thought of delving deeper into that conversation.

Listening a responding starts and ends with the other person. Best advice is usually a person's own experience. When you are talking with another person and they ignore your emotional attachment to what you just said by making it about them; that is upping without listening properly. If you don't like how it feels, imagine what they are feeling when it is done to them.

What happens once you get into a conversation with a random person by talking “With” them? You bring in Jury talk. A style of talking which is quick and to the point. Answering a question with a long winded response takes away from the conversation. Keep answer relatively simple. So to allow the other person to feel in control of the conversation. With Jury talk you are controlling the conversation with your answer's direction.

Example of a Comedian wanting to start a conversation with another person. Begin the conversation using “With, Not to” then jump into “Jury Talk”. Scene is waiting on line at the supermarket.

COMEDIAN
It would be awesome if they invented conveyer belts for humans that go along with the conveyer belt for food.

RANDOM PERSON
(looks at comedian)
People would enjoy that wouldn't they?

COMEDIAN
Oh I am sure. Anything for lazier.

RANDOM PERSON
You should invent that.

COMEDIAN
Who me? Not my specialty.

RANDOM PERSON
What is your specialty?

COMEDIAN
I am a comedian.

RANDOM PERSON
Do you perform around this area?

COMEDIAN
On occasion, Yes I do.

RANDOM PERSON
Where would I see you? (Line moves up)

COMEDIAN
Whoops, the human conveyer belt is moving. Here, Take my card. My site has all that information. (Moving random person away from unimportant relationship growth)

You are welcome.

Take the conversation where you want to go, but keep it simple and to the point. Be playful, or direct. Connect with the person. Once they start asking you about your life then redirect it away from personal. It is about business, and relationship building. Even if for a moment of time. Because then it is practicing networking. Which would be two of your three needs of success!

Talking “to” a person is based on a “me” perspective. “With” is open forum and allows two or more people to have an comfortable conversation about something random. When you talk “To” a person, it is always a direct approach toward a person or persons; “Where do you work?”, “What is your favorite color?”. A great example of talking “With” a person(s); (saying it out loud just to yourself) “This weather is really lovely today.”, “I love the wall color.”

By taking away the pressure of asking a direct question or placing an individual on the spot, you open doors to a comfortable response from them. When a person can “add” their opinion to something you said, they are bringing points to the conversation. It's easier on people to feel a part of something than being directed at, thus becoming the center of attention. Which creates a fear.

When in High School a teacher will call up a student to speak in front of the class. What must be going on in their head is unknown. What is known is this; Public speaking is one of the hardest fears to break free from. It is a skill that is acquired through years of training. When a person is spoken “To”, they are placed into the public speaking (flight or fight) syndrome. Anxiety destroys a conversation. Release a person of that fear by talking “With” them.

The most common mistake people make is talking. It's a hard thing to keep from doing because people want to express themselves. People talk from a perspective of their own needs outside the needs of others. Which makes sense, since we as people have egos. Example “I eat so I survive”, “I sleep so I am rested”, “I protect myself so I can live.” Hard facts of life is we care more about ourselves than other people.

The Art of Conversation is about breaking those rules, or systems, that have been imbedded in us for years as a child; A “I come first” ideology. Think of other people. TAC's psychology is broken down into three simple rules; How to say it, When to say it, and Why to say it. These rules are designed to reteach a person's mind so they can networking with a greater result. Building and cultivating relationships starts with the correct hello.

So what is TAC? How to say it; There are rules to the way you talk with a person, answer their questions, respond, and take part in a conversation. When to say it; Timing is everything. Say it at the wrong time, talk about something out of place, or even bothering a person when they are busy can destroy a conversation before it started. Why to say; Direction above all else will help you lead that conversation even while they are asking the questions.
