A class on class : Working is working

Today's Tip • A class on class : Working is working

There are two sides to every situation; The person doing, and the person having it done to them. When you are at work there is a fine line between being professional and being personal. Of course you want to be a little personal. Getting to know individuals is all part of the networking experience. How personal should you get? Laughing, being friendly, and showing your kindness is a good level of measurement. Flirting, talking about your troubles, or even what is going on at home are all things left inside. You are working, and work is for work, home is for home.

However, you have moments when a person is being professional and another person or persons are being inappropriate. It happens to women a lot more than to men, but it still happens. When a lady is working, say on a movie set, trying to get her foot in the business; she may hand out her business card to people and be friendly. If the guy makes a move on her, or only takes the card to flirt later on, that is unprofessional. There is always a time and a place. This is apart of TAC: The Art of Conversation – When to say it “Never at a business”.

Keep a steady hand when working. Know there will be moments where others are unprofessional. Keep your professionalism up to par. Allow these people to recognize they have stepped over the line without being rude back to them. One thing you could do is say thanks, and be nice, then excuse yourself. Stay away from that person. They'll get the hint. If they call or email you inappropriate messages, respond without acknowledging their inappropriate comments. Simply find things they mentioned that were normal and respond to that.
