Just to finish up S.M.A.R.T. Goals;

Today's Tip – Just to finish up S.M.A.R.T. Goals;

Last week we went over how to set S.M.A.R.T. Goals and gave you a handy printable form to help you accomplish them. Today we are going to go over some other things about goals to help you with your journey just a bit more.

For many of us goals aren't something we really use, dreams yes, wishes, of course, but goals... not so much. We dream and wish about what it is we want to achieve in life but make no solid plans to get there. Setting goals and following them is like having a map of sorts. Dreams are meaningless until written down, only then do they become reality. How to get there though, how to reach them, thats where planning comes into play.

Jotting things down on a piece of paper won't be enough. Making notes here and there wont help you in the long run, although to help you organize your thoughts they could be very helpful. Most times you have this big dream you wish to achieve. Something vague and yet specific at the same time, “I want to be rich,” I want to be famous,” I want a pet monkey.” Things like that. Those are dreams and they can be achieved but not without some very hard work, dedication, planning and some luck. Yes I said Luck there is always an “X” factor, we all know this to be true, at least with things that are intangible like fame. If you have more grounded dreams like “Own my home and have no debt.” That doesn’t need the x-factor or luck. Just dedication and sacrifice.

So here are a few things to keep in mind along with your goal setting and plans.

1. Make sure your end goal is what you want. Don't go after something someone else would want or something you think you should want, but something you actually want to achieve. This take some introspection and thought. Put some time into it or you could end up half way down the wrong path before you realize your mistake.

2. You will have more than one goal, you should have several both long term and short. Your short term goals should help you get to the long term ones. None of them should contradict each other. Trying to buy a home and pay it off while only holding a part time job while working on your acting don't go together very well.

3. Develop goals for all areas of your life. Social, Spiritual, Physical, Financial the list goes on. Figure out whats important to you and build a cohesive plan and goals to help you get there.

4. Never ever write goals like a pessimist. It is self defeating. Focus on what you will achieve not what gets left in the dust.

5. Spend some time thinking about what life will be like when you hit those goals... It will help motivate you.

6. Aim a bit higher then you are comfortable with. Most people will aim a bit lower so they have more confidence but aiming higher will be more motivational. Motivation is more important then comfort and will do more for you.

Now a few other things for you to be aware of. People will try to bring you down once you start taking active steps to improve your situation. Unless the people around you are important to your plans I would suggest not letting them know what you are doing, at least not specifically. Human nature is to bring others down to their level, you may not agree with me but take a look around at the world and rethink that impression. You will be mocked and made fun of both behind your back and to your face because you are taking an active role in what is your life. Even your friends will do this, not out of malice but because they don't understand. That's alright they don't need to as long as you do.

Keep looking at your goals as you go along, make changes when you need to no plan ever survives the first attack, adjust as you need, there isn't anything wrong with making changes as you get more information. Consider it a learning curve. Come up with a routine to look over your goals at least once a week (I suggest at least three times). Use it like a touchstone to re-affirm yourself to your plans. Take this time to do step 5 from above a little dreaming won't hurt you so long as that’s not all you do.

Good Luck!!
