Socializing With Social Media; 4 to 1... interesting!

Today's Tip – Socializing With Social Media; 4 to 1... interesting! -

We all use Social Media to help us out with whatever it is we wish to achieve. For some it's just keeping in touch with old friends. For others it's to help with their work. Finally it can be used to play Farmville or The Sims, at least for Facebook users. So for the remainder of this week I thought it might be nice to go over some great ways to utilize social media, as well as ways not to use it.

Where to start though... tough call. Lets start with sharing things. We are all taught to share when very young. For most people it stuck with them to adulthood, some share a bit to much though. Here is how it should work, or at least more politely. Share at a four to one ratio, that means four things that are helpful to the people you are in contact with and one thing for your benefit alone. Put another way, for the entertainers out there four things to help people who interact with you and one plug about you. If all you ever do is throw out things like “Come see me perform this weekend!” People will start to filter it out, then no one sees it at all anymore. So the 500 plus fans you have is really seven now. You need to give something back in order to keep people's interest. We plug our shows and stuff on our pages for Facebook and other places... We also put out these handy dandy Blog posts, as well as some quotes and humor to try and keep people engaged. That way when we do have something we want to get out there people are more apt to pay attention to it. The extra stuff you put out there should have some value to the people you are trying to reach and if you can add in some humor all the better.

This is especially true when you get new people to follow you. Be it Twitter, Facebook, or some other format new fans are easy to get, but harder to keep. Give them a reason to stick around so you can leverage them when needed. If all you do is plug your own stuff people will tune you out rather quickly. If, on the other hand you give them things they need and want or just entertain them then when you do share your own stuff they are more likely to look at it, absorb it and respond to it.

Tomorrow we will go over building your fan base a bit more by working on who you are and building on it.
