S.M.A.R.T .Goals!; M is for Measurable!

Today's Tip – S.M.A.R.T .Goals!; M is for Measurable! -

Today class we will be going over the second letter for the S.M.A.R.T. Goal setting ways. That's right the Letter “M” for measurable. Measurement is a good thing right? We use measurements to make things like... COOKIES! It should also be used in Goal setting so that you can track your progress.

I bet you are wondering why it is important to be able to measure your progress on the journey to your goal. I'm going to give you a few reasons, enough that hopefully everyone will understand. For those of you who play MMORPG's the example is easy... Levels... you keep playing till you level up, and once you are at max level you still play only now for gear or perhaps to grief others... depends really. For those trying to lose weight, they weigh themselves... Why? So they feel better about how well they are doing and stay motivated to continue their weight-loss program. How about sports? Say fantasy football even. You keep track of stats so you can improve right. You get the idea?

Measurable – Making a criteria that can be used to track your progress in reaching your set goal.

If you can see how you are progressing it helps you stay on track to hit your goal in the set amount of time. You also get a motivational boost from hitting these “benchmarks," which helps you push on toward that goal. Having some trouble deciding on whether the goal you have set is something you can measure? Ask yourself a few simple questions to help you. How much of something do you need daily, weekly or even monthly. If you can't track your progress, then you need to rework your goal so that you can. It's not a SMART goal if there is no way for you to see how well you are progressing. With this in place you can tell if you need to change tactics in order to achieve your goal. In our example yesterday we used this as a goal “Join XYZ Gym in Springfield by the 3rd of January and sign up to go three days per week.” See there three days per week. Something you can check off and track as you go to the gym. Its okay to do more than three but three is the minimum you want to hit in order to get the desired result of getting in shape.

Tomorrow, we will be going over the next letter. “A” for actionable. Not much point in setting goals you can do nothing about. World peace, for example, is great and maybe you can help do this but you need to start small.
