S.M.A.R.T .Goals!; What is a S.M.A.R.T. GOAL?

Today's Tip – S.M.A.R.T .Goals!; What is a S.M.A.R.T. GOAL?

This week we have decided on writing about some basic goal setting. It occurs to me that we should have done this prior to New Years so you could get some assistance with your resolutions, but we didn't. If you would like to take those resolutions though and rework them to fit into a proper goal format, we can certainly do that.

Goals are simple things, achieving them takes effort. In order to help you reach your goals, there are many different acronyms and ways to go about remembering them. I like S.M.A.R.T., which can be broken down several ways I use Specific, Measurable, Actionable, Realistic and Time bound. Actionable you could see replaced with attainable and achievable but to me those both fall under realistic so stick with Actionable. It is not the first goal-setting acronym I learned, but it is the most effective for me. Let's start today with Specific!

Specific: Being specific helps to narrow your focus to the essential elements. Some things to keep in mind.
Who: This will usually be you unless you have employees. Then it could be one of them. Use a name, though remember to be specific.
What: What is it you want them to do?
Where: Where is this going to take place?
When: When will it happen, for how long?
Why: What is the purpose, why are you doing this?

Here is a great example of a really awful goal: “Get in Shape!” I bet several of you used that for your new year's resolution. It's vague, unspecific and won't work. A specific goal would have said. “Join XYZ Gym in Springfield by the 3rd of January and sign up to go three days per week.” I'm sure you can see the difference between the two goals. One of them is a good goal and one of them is a dream, and a bad one at that. Simply saying I want to get in shape is no different then saying I want to be rich or I want to be famous. We all want things, the question is what will you do to get them. Might I suggest setting goals as a way to help you get to where you're aiming.

So there you are folks. Go look at your resolutions again and make sure they are specific. Tomorrow will be brought to you by the letter “M”, “M” is for measurable
